Gas metal arc welding — also known as arc welding — has been in widespread use and continuous development since 1930. In MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding, the arc passes between a consumable wire electrode and the workpiece to be welded. The arc is shielded by helium, carbon dioxide or similar gas mixtures. This welding type demands particular care.
