The cutting process produces a workpiece by removing an unwanted layer of material. A wedge-shaped, sharp-edged tool is set to a specific depth of cut and moves relative to the workpiece.
Under the applied force, pressure builds on the workpiece and the material undergoes shear-type deformation, separating as a chip. As the tool continues to move relative to the workpiece, cutting takes place continuously along what is known as the shear plane.
